Re-lubricating the Remote RL Internal Actuating Mechanism

As preventative maintenance, the 2009 Remote Lockout fork internal cams should be periodically re-lubricated. The following maintenance procedure should be followed only if the Remote Lockout mechanism begins to stick during normal operation. This simple service procedure will restore the internal cams to factory specification performance standards.

Re-lubricate the Internal Cams

  1. Be sure the Shimano Remote Lockout lever is in its unlocked position.
  2. Remove the rebound knob.

  3. Spray the inside of the mechanism through the rebound hole with Torco PL-50 Penetrating Lubricant, the best lubricant for this purpose.

Note:  DO NOT use a lubricant like WD-40, as it is too lightweight. Also, DO NOT use a wax-based lubricant.

If a substitute for Torco PL-50 is necessary, be sure to use an aerosol oil-based Teflon lubricant. The substitute must be heavier than WD-40, but not so heavy as to adversely impact the performance of the internal Remote RL actuator mechanism.
  4. With a blunt pick or small screwdriver inserted through the rebound knob hole, gently push the upper cam back to the unlocked position. Take care that you do not dent the upper cam!

  5. Using the Shimano Remote Lockout lever, actuate the system a couple of times to work the lubricant onto the angled cam surfaces. You may need to reiterate step 4 once or twice if the upper cam continues to stick.
  6. Wipe off any excess lubricant sprayed onto any external Remote Lockout parts.
  7. Reinstall the rebound knob.
